Reunion, October 26th 2013, the Manor Hotel, Yeovil.
39 OVs attended the reunion this year in Yeovil. David Woolfenden was appointed as the official photographer for the occasion and his photos show what an enjoyable evening it was.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of many people there was the most wonderful display of ephemera and memorabilia not only of Verdala School but snaps of life in Malta generally.Oh the memories! But perhaps what was more outstanding was how much had survived after nearly 50 years. Much time was spent remembering and comparing occasions and trying to remember names and even recognising one another. How many times did I hear someone say “I remember when we used to….”?
Martin Powell had brought an ancient Maltese relic with him which he sounded at the start of the evening – the old sound of the karozzin bell. However, before the meal started. A toast was proposed to the memory of Jane Banks who died suddenly soon after the last Malta reunion. Jane will be remembered for all her enthusiasm for reunions, her love of Malta and above all, her love of Verdala School.
After the meal, a special presentation was made to Liz Mardel in recognition of her terrific and continued support to the website. Martin Powell and Andrew West gave serious citations to Liz and then Andrew presented the chain of office for her role as Honorary President of the Verdala website and all reunions. Not many presidents can boast of such a prestigious honour and chain of office – a diamond encrusted frame to surround the Verdala crest and a topaz drop to complete the frame! Well done Liz and well deserved. Liz with typical humility accepted the honorary award. This was followed by another presentation to Liz by Pauline Mendez (nee Hargreaves) on behalf of all attendees of a beautiful Irish crystal clock – as a reminder not to be late for any future reunions.
The whole reunion was thoroughly enjoyable due to everyone being of the same mind and enjoying all their memories which they were happy to share. Connections with old friends were made but one thing was missing……….we weren’t in Malta.
Luckily Pauline Hargreaves has plans in the making for a reunion in Malta next year and of course a visit to Verdala School. Although in the early stages of planning, it looks as if the visit could be in early October 2014. Keep watching the website for further details.
I should like to thank everyone who came to the reunion and made it such an enjoyable occasion. In particular, David for taking all the photos of the evening and thus excluding himself from any that he took. Also to those who went to great lengths to be there – Richard from South Africa, Susie from Holland and Pauline from Ireland.
One regret? Yes! We were all so busy talking that we forgot to take a group photo.

The Manor Hotel is easy to locate - just follow signs for The Octagon Theatre and Town Centre in Yeovil. The Hotel is on the opposite side of the road to the theatre.
Registration at the hotel is from 3.00pm.Please register your car for parking there with the receptionist and also your credit/debit card if you intend to pay by that method.
Tea and coffee making facilities are in your room or you can order tea/coffee in the lounge area. (£1.90 per pot for tea).
I suspect that we will be bumping into each other before the welcome drinks in the conservatory area. Officially we will start at 6.30pm for drinks. If you have any ephemera or memorabilia or anything else that you would like to put on display - there will be tables in the conservatory laid out for these items.
Name labels will be there also.
We shall be sitting at tables of 8 people. Please take a name card (which will also have your menu selection on it) and place it wherever you would like to sit. There will not be a seating plan.
There will be a cash bar during the evening until midnight.

It would also be extremely helpful to the organiser, Sue Adams, to get an up-to-date position of the numbers attending to assist forward planning. Numbers are gradually increasing and it would be useful if you would kindly consider making a commitment within the next month or so. Accommodation may be booked at the hotel. A special rate, to include breakfast has been arranged - £75 for a double room, £50 for a single room. People wishing to stay at the hotel must book this themselves and use the code "Verdala" to obtain this rate.
The cost of the meal will be £25, to include a welcome glass of wine. A cash bar will be available throughout the evening. The evening is intended to be relaxed and informal with plenty of opportunities to reminisce and remember the good old days.
We would very much appreciate if you would kindly complete the pro-forma Reply Form on the website and return it to Sue Adams as soon as possible so that we can have a preliminary idea of numbers.
